Why Tanzania Is a Specialty Coffee Origin Worth Knowing
Tanzania is Africa's fifth largest coffee producer and one of its most diverse specialty origins — yet it remains significantly underrated compared to Ethiopia and Kenya in the global specialty market. This gap between quality and recognition represents an opportunity for roasters willing to explore the origin seriously.
Tanzania produces exclusively arabica coffee (approximately 70%) alongside robusta (30%), with the specialty-grade arabica concentrated in high-altitude growing regions that span the country from north to south. The diversity of growing conditions — volcanic soils, equatorial climate moderated by altitude, distinct wet and dry seasons, multiple varietal types — creates an extraordinary range of cup profiles within one country.
1. Kilimanjaro Region
Tanzania's flagship specialty coffee origin. Coffee is grown on the southern and eastern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro between 1,400 and 2,000 metres, in deep volcanic soils formed by the mountain's ancient eruptive history. The Chagga people have cultivated coffee here for over a century in a traditional agroforestry system — growing coffee under banana and shade trees — that naturally moderates temperature and slows cherry development.
Cup Profile: Bright, clean, floral. Jasmine, Meyer lemon, peach, bergamot. Tea-like finish. Best in washed processing for clarity. Natural lots add berry fruit and more body.
Best for: Filter and pour-over roasters seeking a classic East African profile with exceptional clarity and origin character.

2. Songwe–Mbozi Region
Located in the southern highlands of Tanzania along the Zambian border, Songwe–Mbozi sits at altitudes of 1,500 to 1,900m in cool, misty conditions that slow cherry development and build exceptional cup complexity. The region's rich red clay soils, high rainfall, and well-drained hillsides create ideal growing conditions for structured, high-scoring specialty lots.
Songwe–Mbozi is home to a strong network of smallholder farmers and cooperative washing stations. Its consistent altitude and climate produce some of Tanzania's most reliable specialty lots — clean fermentation, structured acidity, and a clearly defined cup profile that roasters return to season after season.
Cup Profile: Bright acidity, stone fruit, apricot, citrus zest, clean caramel finish. Excellent clarity in washed processing.

3. Mbinga Region
Mbinga sits in the Ruvuma region of southern Tanzania, bordering Mozambique, at altitudes of 1,200 to 1,800m. One of Tanzania's most established and prolific coffee-growing areas, Mbinga has been producing specialty coffee for decades and accounts for a significant share of the country's total export volume. The region's volcanic soils, reliable rainfall, and cool temperatures create conditions for full-bodied, richly flavoured lots with excellent bean density.
Mbinga is our primary source for full-bodied AA lots. The region's mature cooperative infrastructure and experienced farming community deliver consistently high quality — making it an ideal origin for roasters seeking reliable, well-structured Tanzanian coffee with depth and sweetness.
Cup Profile: Full body, dark chocolate, red plum, mild spice, smooth finish. Washed lots offer clean structure; naturals add dark berry and syrupy sweetness.
Tanzania Coffee Grading System
Tanzania uses a screen-size and defect-based grading system. Screen size refers to the diameter of holes in a grading screen, measured in 1/64 inches:
| Grade | Screen Size | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| AA | 18+ | Largest, premium specialty grade |
| A | 17–18 | Excellent quality, common in specialty |
| B | 15–16 | Good quality, specialty blend use |
| PB (Peaberry) | Round, small | Single bean per cherry, intense flavour |
| C, E | <15 | Commercial grade, not specialty |
Grade describes physical size and defect count — it does not guarantee cup quality. Always evaluate by cupping score, not grade alone. Our Q-Grader cups every lot regardless of grade to verify cup quality independently.
